Let’s talk about something that should never become routine: range safety.
I spent 25 years in law enforcement and I’ve seen firsthand how quickly things can go wrong when people get too comfortable around firearms. Whether you’ve been shooting for decades or you’re brand new to it, safety has to come first every single time. It’s not just about avoiding accidents—it’s about building muscle memory, discipline, and respect for what you’re carrying.
Here’s what I tell every student I train:
Complacency is dangerous.
The most “experienced” shooters are sometimes the ones who forget the basics. They’ve done it so many times they stop thinking about it—and that’s when problems happen.
No matter your skill level, you don’t outgrow the fundamentals.
The Big 4 Safety Rules (No exceptions—ever):
- Treat every firearm like it’s loaded.
- Never point it at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
- Know your target—and what’s beyond it.
I don’t care how many times you’ve heard them—you should know them cold.
Range Safety Is Everybody’s Job
It’s not just on the RSO. If you’re on the range and see something sketchy, say something. I’d rather someone be annoyed than someone get hurt. That’s the mindset I brought from law enforcement into my firearms instruction—and it’s what I expect from the folks I train.
✅ Keep your muzzle in a safe direction
✅ Stay alert and aware
✅ Don’t be “that guy” who turns around holding a loaded weapon
Be the example. That’s what real responsibility looks like.
I tell my students all the time:
How you train is how you’ll react under pressure.
So let’s train right. Train safe. And carry with confidence.
If you’re looking for real-world firearms instruction from someone who’s been on both sides of the badge, I’d be honored to help you sharpen your skills.
I offer:
